In the last couple of years, Catherine had been mildly involved with her youth group at church and was friends with Summer, who is presently serving as a 1st year Intern with Cru on the Greater Arkansas Team.
Stepping onto The University of Central Arkansas as a freshman this fall, Catherine was not looking to get connected with Cru or any campus ministry. For a variety of reasons, Catherine was angry with God, partly due to battling cancer in the recent past. She did however, like all good freshman, check out the campus Activity Fair to see what was offered & available.
Cru had a table at the fair, and Catherine saw that Summer was actually helping at the table, and recalls, “I went over to give Summer a big hug…but then she ‘pulled a Summer’ & drew me in…and I just couldn’t leave!”
Summer & Catherine began to meet on a fairly regular basis to catch up on life, and talked some about faith & God. Eventually, Catherine felt safe enough with Summer to tell her, “I don’t really believe in God, and I’ve basically been faking it.” A week or two later, Catherine said she still didn’t believe in God and wasn’t ready to believe in Him, but she WANTED to get to that point in her life someday.
These weekly chats continued, and when Summer invited Catherine to attend Cru’s Fall Retreat, she did! It’s likely that the stage had been set because of the trustworthy relationship that Catherine had with Summer & their regular conversations, and God spoke personally to her thru the talks at Fall Retreat.
While out on a quiet walk in the woods after one of the talks, Catherine was processing all she had been learning & talking about with Summer, and the things the speaker said. There in the still, tranquil atmosphere of the woods—just her & the presence of God—Catherine decided to ask Jesus into her life & begin a new journey together with Him.
Not even a full week later, Catherine stood in front of nearly 60 other students at their weekly Cru meeting to share her testimony. One of the details she communicated was that it was apparent to her that Jesus was already changing her life from the inside out. Normally a shy person, she would have NEVER before stood in front of a group of people like this to share anything! Time & again we see God move in our cities, our communities, our campuses, and while away from campus at our Fall Retreats. He is always changing lives, one at a time, lives just like Catherine’s.
